Today's Passage: Mark 9
The Transfiguration is suck an amazing story to me. I mean to be a disciple and actually hang out with Jesus is already mind blowing to me. But to go up on a mountain and have Jesus transform into this beautiful image of light in front of your very eyes, and then to have Elijah and Moses appear. I mean wow!
It's no wonder that Peter kind of runs his mouth by saying lets build three alters for the three of you. When his focus should have been on the only one that deserves an alter, God. It even says in verse 6, "He did not know what to say, they were so frightened."
It's from this event that we get the christian term "Mountain Top Experience." This term just describes an event or series of events that cause some one to feel exceptionally close to God. We should cherish these events but also realize this only happened once in the disciples lives and only three of them got to witness it. I say this to point out that mountain top experiences are definitely the exception to the rule. We will spend most of our spiritual lives in the valley trusting and obeying God, but every once in a while He'll invite us up and completely change our perception of the world around us.
What an awesome God we serve!
