Today's Passage: Proverbs 8 & 9

Very poetically our first passage quotes wisdom and understanding as if she herself had a voice. She calls from many points along the traveler's path: the heights beside the way, the crossroads, the gates, and the entrance. This emphasizes that wisdom is for all people, early-on or well-advanced in their walk. She calls to the simple and the fool (that would be us). She commands us to hear (vs. 6) and to take (vs.10). This is so basic! The riches of wisdom are within our grasp and yet we value them so little. However, as we read on, we see that wisdom plays a significant role in our very existence.

One striking bit of truth is found in chapter 8, verse 22—God possessed wisdom at the beginning of His work. It sounds so elementary but it is so eye opening to our vital need for wisdom. If the foundations of the earth and the breath of life were brought forth from the wisdom of God, then how necessary is wisdom to our lives?
