Today's Passage: Ecclesiastes 1-2
Ecclesiastes and the vast majority of Proverbs was written by Solomon, King David's son. When Solomon took the throne, God said to him, "Ask what I shall give you." Solomon was King over all the Israelites however, he realized that they were God's people. He feared God and subsequently asked for wisdom and knowledge to rule over them with (2 Chronicles 1:7-13). God gave freely and abundantly knowing that this was the true desire of Solomon's heart.
In the first two chapters of Ecclesiastes we discover that life itself is vanity. In other words—life is worthless. There is nothing to gain under the sun (2:11). Everything we establish here on earth will one day fade away. Both the wise man and the fool will live, die, and be forgotten. A sad and harsh ending indeed but we have hope.
We toil beneath the sun, not for earthly treasures, but for heavenly treasures. Jesus is our hope. Praise the Lord, that we have been saved and have a new and eternal life to look forward to.
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
