Today's Passage:  Job 14

What does the tragedy of Haiti cause you to think about?  Compassion, sorrow, life and death?  All grim concepts I know, but it truly causes me to see the frailty of human life.  One earthquake has caused monumental destruction and death.  It only took a few moments to insert a natural disaster of epic proportions into future history books.  We are a weak and fragile creation that invariably returns to dust.

This 'optimistic' view of life is broached by Job 14.  As compared to the tree, humans have a meager existence of inevitable decay.  While we can worry or focus on this truth, we would be much better off focusing on what we can do with what we have.  Not one of us knows truly what this day will bring.  However, we can focus our energies on worshiping God in everything we do.  How will your day look if you focus on worshiping God through all your circumstances?  For me, it will certainly be much more optimistic and full of joy. Let's attempt to control only what we can control today.

Since I recently had a sociology course on Disasters, Haiti makes me think of how the decisions we make and the actions we take affect our daily lives. From a sociologist perspective, disasters are not natural, they are man made. The decisions that a society makes about safety, building codes, planning, medical care, etc... create the social disaster that causes such great suffering.

I think the same concept can be applied to our relationship with God. The decisions we make and the actions we take in regard to our spirituality are much the same. If we ignore God, fail to develop a relationship with Him, avoid making plans with Him as the center of our lives , we can also expect a spiritual disaster.

Life is very fragile and very precious. The same can be said of spirituality. The conditions in Haiti also remind me of the deep down goodness of people. There are many angels trying their hardest to ease the suffering of these people, just as Jesus suffered for all of us.
