Today's Passage: Hebrews 1
This passage can be summed up as easily as saying Jesus is greater than the angels. Which to most of us may seem like common sense. However we need to understand that the book of Hebrews was written to clarify three things to converted Jews: Christ's authority, Christ's works or ministry and the believers walk of faith. So why does the writer of Hebrews camp out for a whole chapter on the fact that Jesus is superior to the angels?
Well we need to understand where Jewish converts were coming from. Jesus brought a whole new message from God about how man's relationship with Him would work. In the Old Testament God sent angels to communicate such messages. I'm sure that many converted Jews thought that Jesus was just another angel. By doing this they were negating Jesus' authority which in turn weaken His primary message... That He was God in the form of man come down to saves us!
The writer of Hebrews does a beautiful job pointing out the huge differences between how God treats the angels and the authority given to Jesus. Jesus is supreme over all things, that including the angels.
