Today's Passage: Hebrews 1

This passage can be summed up as easily as saying Jesus is greater than the angels.  Which to most of us may seem like common sense.  However we need to understand that the book of Hebrews was written to clarify three things to converted Jews: Christ's authority, Christ's works or ministry and the believers walk of faith.  So why does the writer of Hebrews camp out for a whole chapter on the fact that Jesus is superior to the angels?

Well we need to understand where Jewish converts were coming from.  Jesus brought a whole new message from God about how man's relationship with Him would work.  In the Old Testament God sent angels to communicate such messages.  I'm sure that many converted Jews thought that Jesus was just another angel.  By doing this they were negating Jesus' authority which in turn weaken His primary message... That He was God in the form of man come down to saves us!

The writer of Hebrews does a beautiful job pointing out the huge differences between how God treats the angels and the authority given to Jesus.  Jesus is supreme over all things, that including the angels.

(a) Today I think most people see Jesus in a good light and can aprpeciate the good that he did while he was here on earth. Unfortunately the number of people who believe in His divinity and His resurrection is dwindling.I hope that most of the time my life shows the grace and unconditional love that God has shown to me through His son Jesus.Christ has changed me and brought peace and purpose to a life filled with pride and confusion. He is the one I model my life after.(b)This is a tough one. In addition to our discussion on Sunday, I wonder if the prevalence of first-person post-resurrection encounters with Jesus painted the idea of Him being angelic rather than human. Check out Luke 24. That could lead many to think angel. Just a thought.(c)I am drawn again and again to the words exact representation. That is something that my mind keeps going back to. I should memorize these four verses anyone what to try that with me?
