Today's Passage: Psalm 79-80
In these psalms the nation of Israel cries out to God for restoration from their neighboring enemies and from sin. All throughout the Israelite's history we see them suffering under the hand of their enemy (i.e. Egypt. Babylon, Rome). This was usually a result of their sin against God.
We can relate to the suffering of the israelites through the affliction that we face from the consequences of sin. They were being slaughtered by their enemies and, in a similar way, we suffer under the hand of sin. God ultimately restores us in Jesus Christ and we become adopted into His family as children of God. However, just as a good parent punishes his children to teach them how to live properly, so God punishes us when we sin so that we can live out Godly and prosperous lives. The Israelites were God's chosen people and yet He still made them endure the consequences. Here is what they sing,
"Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let your face shine, that we may be saved!" (Psalms 80:19)
As christians, we walk according to grace with the knowledge that all of our sins are covered and we stand before God as a new creation in Jesus Christ. We are pure and perfect because of Him. This does not eliminate the fact that we still fall and scrape our knees sometimes. However, this lends opportunity for God to show His faithfulness in repairing us. This glorifies His name and shows others how great, powerful, and capable our God is to restore even the most broken of people.
