Today's Passage: Exodus 27
Science says our brains remember everything we see, hear, and experience. The challenge seems to be calling up those memories (the helpful ones) at the appropriate times. Perhaps our lack of memory is why we are so attracted to objects and symbols as a way to recall events and feelings.
In today's chapter, the description of how to build the altar of burnt offering is described, again in great and exact detail as the other items of the Tabernacle. Interestingly, the further one got from the Most Holy, the lesser the value of the materials, as is seen here with the use of bronze in the utensils (Exodus 27:19).
There is much symbolism in every article of the Tabernacle and its practices. It was a way of both forthtelling and foretelling of the ultimate sacrifice Christ would make for all of us. In verses 20 and 21, the perpetual light that was to be burned from evening until morning symbolized the Holy Spirit. These were tangible physical things that would help the children of Israel understand and remember the Most High as the center of their lives.
Symbols and objects that we hold for the sake of memory can also be at trap. Some people will hold on to objects that symbolize sadness and pain. It's as if they feel forced to carry on the memorial of pain privately since no one else will. Do you have any such items you still carry, even if only a memory? Remember that the Lord is perfect in justice. (2 Peter 3:9) He knows what you have endured and you need not carry it. He would like to carry it for you and set you free.
May you be able to give it to Him today and leave it there. If not you, you surely know someone who does, and could use your prayer of freedom today.
