Today's Passage:  Job 34-35

“In a cruel and evil world, being cynical can allow you to get some entertainment out of it."  This quote reminded me of the way some people operate in our society.  Cynicism is a dangerous mindset, but can often be seen as intelligent and scientific in nature.  However, a cynical person is often one of the most unhappy individuals a person can meet because nothing is truly acceptable to them.  How then can you correct and help promote optimism for a cynic?

While there are no easy answers, Elihu seems to attempt to do so with Job who at this point has very few kind words to say about God.  In a loving way, Elihu shows Job that God is the true standard on which we base everything.  Additionally, he challenges Job to grow up and get over his issues.  While Job experienced significant suffering, that does not justify an improper attitude toward God.

Do you know a cynic?  Could it be that someone reading this blog is a cynic?  Well, at some point in our Christian journey we or someone we know will deal with cynicism and the tension it has with faith.  Let us be reminded that God is not out to get us and life in Him is a truly beautiful experience.  Jot down a few things where God has been exceedingly gracious to you in your life.  As you do that remember to thank Him for all the blessings that have come your way.
