Today's Passage: Titus 1
What's on your resume? Today the details of your resume have never been more important in the professional world. It shows the accomplishments and credentials that prove you can do the job. What if someone with a sales resume submitted it for the position of a lawyer, doctor, or a contractor? They would obviously not get the job; a resume has to match the job!
In a way, Paul is sharing with Titus what should be on the "resume" for someone who wants to be an overseer or elder in verses 6-9. It's a pretty daunting list in relation to present day morals, isn't it? A quick read might suggest that absolute perfection is required for serving God in this way. Twice Paul uses the word, "blameless," but this does not mean perfect. The issue Paul is speaking of is integrity. When we sin and confess to God, He finds us blameless, because the debt has been paid by Christ on the cross. When we sin and do not confess, we are left with guilt (blame) because we have not put ourselves in the place to hear God say that it's been paid for on the cross. So the summary of what Paul is saying is that an elder, overseer, deacon, etc. must walk in the discipline of integrity, or confession. One more thing, (free of charge) this should not be limited to just the laity or professional ministers of our churches. No matter what job we currently hold, no matter what is on our current resume, we should walk in this same discipline so that we might bring glory to God and lost souls into the kingdom.
