Today's Passage: Hebrews 9

I love how the writer of Hebrews shows the correlation between the Old Testament Tabernacle practices and the work of Christ. The Old Testament practices were repeated and only had temporary benefits. However the work of Jesus was a one time act that has eternal significance for all people. Let's take a moment to look and what is stated in this passage about each one.

The Tabernacle:

  • Regulated worship
  • An earthly sanctuary
  • The High Priest had to sacrifice for his own sin before entering into the Holy Place in the tabernacle.
  • He could only enter in this room once a year.
  • These actions and ceremonies were not able to clear the conscience of the worshipper -v9
  • The Priest, an limited human being, acted as mediator between God and the people.

Christ:

  • Christ did not have to offer a sin offering for himself because he was sinless.
  • The tabernacle that he entered into was not man-made but rather a spiritual one.-v24
  • He did not have to offer himself year after year because what he did on the cross was so powerful that it had to be done just one time.
  • What Jesus did cleansed our souls (the interior not just the exterior), cleared our consciences, and made us free to serve God.
  • Jesus, the unlimited Son of God, is an eternal mediator between us and God the Father.
