Today's Passage: Acts 6

Every time I read this chapter I am always encouraged. The apostles were not Supermen. Sure, God had gifted them in a special way to lead the first churches of believers. They had quite a power given to them by God. Yet they knew their limits. When the Jews came to them with their complaints, they did not immediately try to take more onto themselves. The delegated it out to the disciples and focused themselves back onto the ministry of prayer and the word. God had called them for that specific purpose and they knew it. They did not try to be something they weren't, nor did they try to be so powerful that they wouldn't let anyone help. But the body of believers is not meant to be that way. We are supposed to be a supportive body. Each person has their calling and their purpose. We should be helping others find their place and giving them what they need to succeed. Likewise, we should be focusing on what God has called us to do. There is no need to try to be something else.God has gifted you for a specific purpose. Do you know what it is? Are you still trying to figure it out?

There is an amazing end to this short story. The author of Acts tells us that God's word spread and the number of disciples grew rapidly. What do you think would have happened it the apostles tried to do all the work themselves? They would not have been able to commit themselves to prayer and to the word like they did. If that had been the case it is not unreasonable to think that the gospel would not have been so rapidly spread. God can of course use any person and any circumstance. But when his people are obedient to do what they are called to do and work together, that is a prime time to see God work.
