Today's Passage: Exodus 22
Why do we have to have a speed limit? Many times when I am cruising down the Interstate (except for I-35...all you do it park on I-35) I find myself being passed by those exceeding the speed limit. From time to time I find myself taken by surprise by a swarm of loud, rocket like motorcycles and I let out an embarrassing yelp.
Imaging if there were no speed limit. Imagine no traffic laws whatsoever. Sound like chaos right?
If you are reading in the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Bible) you will discover an ocean of rules and laws. Why did God make so many laws? Well for starters he made the laws to keep their nation from spiraling into chaos.Rules keep people from going off the deep end most of the time.
I think that the best reason for the laws are found in verse 31 where God says, "You are to be my holy people."
Our behavior needs to follow certain guidelines and restrictions. Paul said in the NT that he was allowed to do whatever he desired buy only certain thing would edify. God did not make rules to be a giant kill-joy. He made those rules and laws to show us how to live and act as his people. As others watch how we live our lives they need to see a distinct dedication to God.
