Today's Passage: 2 Peter 3
If you are a movie buff you will probably remember the infamous phrase, "I'll be back!" Like most action heroes in the 80's Arnold Schwarzenegger coined a catch phrase that was used at least once in most of his movies. And if he said, "I'll be back," then you could rest assure that he was going to be back.
In 2 Peter 3 the topic is the certain return of the Lord. Peter was warning them about those who were doubtful that Jesus would one day return. All throughout the chapter you see reminders placed in with phrases such as, "Reminders", "recall", "understand", "do not forget," and others like, "as you look forward", or "since you are looking forward to this."
Believers in Jesus should never doubt that Jesus will one day return. Looking throughout the Bible we see a God that has kept his promises and been faithful to all who rely on him. In Acts 1:10-11 we have the ultimate "I'll be back" proclamation of all time. Jesus had just ascended into heaven and was just out of sight when two angels basically say, "He'll be back."
The creator of the universe is far more capable than an action hero. So if he says that he will be back then he will. Try not to get impatient or lose heart. Instead, focus on what we should be doing while we are waiting for him. Verse 18 says that we should be growing in grace and knowledge of Jesus. So as we wait for his return, we should be putting forth the effort to grow in Christ, follow his example and serve him every chance we get.
