Today's Passage: 3 John
Have you ever met siblings that were as different as night and day? They may have the same parents, be cut from the same cloth so to speak, but have two totally different outlooks on life. In 3 John we see two people that are professed believers in Jesus but they have made choices that are greatly different. John describes Gaius as someone that is faithful, truthful, and someone that does good for people (even people that he does not know). Diotrephes, on the other hand, was described as someone that loved to be first, shunned particular brothers and sisters in the Lord, he was even gossiping and even kicking people out of the church.
Which person do you think would have been more successful in drawing people toward the love of God? 1 Corinthians 13:13 states that the greatest spiritual gift we have is love. Everything we do must be done out of love. The book of Ephesians even tells us to speak the truth in love. So here we have a very basic and important lesson; how things are done is just as important as what is being done.
