Today's Passage: Exodus 32
What do you turn to in the absence of spiritual leadership? In other words, when you feel stressed or confused what do you do for comfort? The people were completely dependent on Moses, and while he was up on the mountain meeting with God, they either got worried, scared, or just plain bored. So they asked Aaron to make them a god to go before them, and went on to do worse. They could have stayed faithful to God, they saw Him part the Red Sea. They saw God's deliverance numerous times and in numerous ways by now, but they still turned away from Him. And we cannot sit in the place of accusation of them because we do the same thing. How much more are we without excuse! We have the entirety of the Bible complete with the Gospel and we still turn away and make our own golden calf! Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?" Only God can--and only God can heal our wicked hearts! Let's meditate on the words of this very familiar chorus throughout our day.
We bow our hearts
We bend our knees
O Spirit, come make us humble
We turn our eyes
from evil things
O Lord, we cast down our idols
Give us clean hands
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
O God, let us be a generation that seeks,
seeks Your face, O God of Jacob
