Today's Passage: Jeremiah 34-36
Things are continuing to get worse for both Israel and Judah. You would think that in the face of the persecution from Nebuchadnezzar, they would be so anxious to repent and trust God. But instead they continue to ignore the warnings that God gives Jeremiah. In these three chapters we can see how selfish and rebellious they really are...they do the right thing, then go back to the wrong so quickly. God even uses a foreigner to show His people how they should listen to their own heavenly father!
I think that chapter 36 really sums up what the people had decided...and what we decide sometimes. The king doesn't want to hear the truth, so he simply burns the scroll..as if burning the evidence makes the words of God untrue! You can just hear the thought process: "Well, if the scroll doesn't exist, then none of what it said will happen. No one knows and I can easily forget!"
When will we learn that pretending God's Word doesn't exist doesn't mean we are not subject to the consequences of disobedience! We can't just cover our eyes and ears and then pretend we can do what we want. God's Word is truth...it remains truth even when we choose to ignore it.
