Today's Passage: Psalms 132-133
Psalm 133:1 says, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!" If anyone could write these words and mean them, it would have been David. There aren't many times in the story of his life where he was able to enjoy brothers living together without conflict. When we meet David, his physical brothers are angry at him for coming to the battle. When David rises in Israel, Saul wants to kill him. Because David made very poor choices, even his sons turn against him. So, again, if anyone is qualified to talk about how good unity feels, it would be David...unity was something he longed for in his life!
Unity is hard to come by, as our brains seem to be wired for just the opposite. We are quick to tear people down, point out flaws, or make ourselves feel better at someone else's expense. We say things in secret that we would never say to someone's face. We look for ways to get ahead, even when it may hurt someone else.
These things come easily to us because these are the actions of the world. But we have been transformed by Jesus Christ, and our desires should be on His plan! When we have the choice, we should choose unity. Does that mean there will never be conflict in the body? Of course not, but even those can be handled in a way that brings unity, not division.
It is good to dwell together in unity...let's strive to live in a manner that is good and pleasant!
