Today's Passage: Genesis 13

Today's chapter reveals much about the differences in character between Abram and Lot. The Lord had blessed them both so much in the land that they could no longer dwell close together. Notably, Abram is the first to 1) acknowledge there is a problem, and 2) offer Lot the choice in a solution.

Lot showed his greed in selecting for himself the obvious well-watered plain of Jordan, no doubt [at first look] the better of the two choices. I wonder if he thought Abram a fool for letting him choose. Perhaps for Abram the question of provision was already answered since he had walked so closely with the Lord already. Or perhaps, as one of the heros of faith, he was simply trusting that the Lord would be faithful to him even if the landscape was rocky.

How often do we look at the "greener pasture" or "path of least resistance" and choose it since it appears to be more blessed, rather than the rocky road less traveled that the Lord seems to be offering us? In the case of Abram and Lot, Lot chose what he could see, what he knew was familiar, and what appeared to him to already work. Yet, even at this juncture, we already see trouble on the horizon, for verse 13 mentions the evil of the men of Sodom.

Is the Lord challenging you to move beyond the familiar, the "safe" place today? Remember He is able and willing to do exceedingly abundantly above all we expect or think. He loves to reward obedience. In verse 16 He makes a promise to Abram to bless him with descendants, and encourages him to "talk a walk". Take a walk of faith today. You will not regret it.
