Today's Passage: John 8

In this chapter of John, Jesus does a great deal to prove his authority and the truth that He speaks. This week I would like to focus on verses 1-11 and the story of the adulterous woman.

This piece of scripture is a little like an orphaned passage. In some of the older manuscripts this passage is found else where in John and even others put it in the gospel of Luke after 21:38. It is important to note that this passage is found in older manuscripts just not in this specific place.

The story told in verses 1-11 is one that many of us sadly can relate to. Almost all of us have faced condemnation from someone for our actions. The important point that Jesus makes is none of us, that are human, posses the right to condemn anyone else for there disobedience to God. Even Jesus at the end of the passage states that He doesn't condemn the woman. He just gives her one clear command "leave your life of sin." Jesus didn't yell; Jesus didn't call her names; Jesus didn't even say lets talk about why this is wrong, the woman knew that her actions were not acceptable and she was thankful for the opportunity to set thing right. It is important for others to be aware of the consequences of their actions however we should look first to restore others before we condemn them.

Next time you talk with someone about their mistakes think about your mistakes first and how God has given you a second, third and fourth chance. Leave the judgment and sentencing to the one who is perfect.
