Today's Passage: Isaiah 14-16
In these verses Isaiah continues to prophesize against the nations around Judah, specifically Babylon, Assyria, Philistia and Moab.
One of the most interesting passage in these chapters is found in chapter 14 verses 12-15. In these verses Isaiah compares the Babylonian king's coming fall to Satan's fall from heaven. There are only a couple passages in the Bible that actually describe the events of Satan being expelled from Heaven and this is one of them. An interesting fact about Satan is that although not everyone believed that the God of the Bible was the one and only God most people in this time did believe that there was a hell and a keeper of hell. So even though the Babylonian king might not have believed in our God he would have been familiar with Satan and his self-inflicted predicament. These words that Isaiah used would have definitely hit home and truly outlined what was going to happen because of the king's self-righteousness.
How frightening/motivating would it be if you were compared to Satan in the context of selfishness? It would definitely prompt some reevaluation for me. Now as believers God by no means sees us in this way but none the less it is a reminder to maintain our humility in God's grace and mercy. Amen!?!
