Today's Passage: 1 Corinthians 11
As we study God's Word together, we spend a lot of time talking about what we do...it seems that most of our focus is on our decision making ability. We know the things we should do and the things we shouldn't, as most of them are very clear in scripture. But how often do we ask ourselves why we do what we do (or why we don't do what we shouldn't)?
Much of this passage is not concerned with the action being done, but rather the heart behind the actions. The church was celebrating the Lord's Supper together...that was the right action. But the way they were doing it and some of the reasons why they were celebrating showed they really didn't understand why it was important. Instead of honoring Jesus, they were doing it to get full....or worse, to get drunk. They were technically going through the motions of worship, but there was nothing worshipful about their hearts or actions. That's why Paul tells them they should reflect on the condition of their hearts before the Lord's Supper. Even though they were doing the right action, the wrong heart was still leading to destruction.
Does your heart match your actions? Are you doing things that seem like they are good on the outside but have no importance on the inside? God is looking for obedience with devotion and love, not just obedience in action alone.
